Before 1826 he had formed a de facto relationship with a native woman named Mary of the Mowgee clan that lived in the area now occupied by the town of Mudgee NSW (which was named for her clan). They had a son named William Isaac Kemp but Mary must have died or separated from William at some time over the next few years. Her final resting place is unknown.
